Imagine One Person Who Knows the Answers About Seniors!
The Denver Post on August 5, 2013 quotes "If the 1908's were about greed and accumulating possessions, the current era is about downsizing and letting go of those possessions, says Denver gerontologist Karen Owen-Lee, author of 'The Caring Code:What Boomers Need to Know About Seniors.'" " The Baby Boomers are already started turning 65, and their parents are in their 80"s, and they need to assist their parents moving from their house of 40 years to independent living or assisted living," Owen-Lee.
On Channel 9, KUSA-Denver, Colorado and Company airing on August 19, 2013, host Denise Plante questioned Owen-Lee, "When should you start planning for your parent's future?" Karen responded with a laugh, "what were you doing yesterday? We needed to start yesterday, no later than today."
Adult children with aging parents must recognize that they are dealing with role reverse as a loved one ages. Did your mother take you to the first day of kindergarten and fix your outfit for prom or your wedding. They have done many things for you when you were younger, now is your time to help them have a safe and comfortable future. It is imperative that you have a written plan for them before a crisis occurs.
Planning for the future means gathering the family with the senior to delegate responsibilities. If 'mom' becomes ill who will bring her meals? Who will collect important papers like a will or bank statement? These types of conversations are extremely difficult, again proceed now before your elder cannot participate.
